Since he wasn’t blocking it, she stumbled into the room, arms pinwheeling, before managing to catch her balance. With a huff of frustration, the child landed on the floor on her feet, so he moved out of the way of the door.Ībout half a second later, Henrietta hit the door with substantial force. “Still looking!” he chirped in a cheerful tone while frantically gesturing for Emmie to get down. She actually managed to make him budge a couple inches, so he put his back into bracing the door closed. “Did you find her?” asked Henrietta moments before she used her shoulder or something to ram the door. Please come down.” He pointed at the floor, keeping his expression as stern as possible while hoping the nanny couldn’t hear their whispers. “Did you know I could float?” Emmie asked him, doing a quick flip in the air. Give me a second and I’ll get it right open.” Get down right now,” he hiss-whispered before saying loudly, “Sorry, door sticks sometimes. “Hi, Daddy,” Emmie whispered, covering her mouth to stifle another giggle. “Gannon?” the nanny said from the other room. The slightly pained and surprised sound had him cringing, but not as much as the sight of his small daughter hovering in the air above the stove. He heard the nanny hit the door with an oof. His longer stride got him to the kitchen a few steps before Henrietta, which was how he heard the soft giggle and managed to hold the swinging door connecting the kitchen to the dining room closed in the nick of time. It had been, so he just nodded and jogged down the stairs. Also, she can’t reach the deadbolts, right? Was the front door still locked when you got back?” “If I’d heard a door, I wouldn’t still be looking inside. “You’re sure you didn’t hear either of the doors opening?” he asked her, more for something to say than anything else. Then he checked his room-sometimes she liked to tuck up with a stuffed toy in his closet, which explained the blanket there on top of a few miscellaneous garments that she’d knocked off hangers while playing in there.īy the time they finished checking the upstairs, his new nanny was wringing her hands like a character in a melodrama. The first place he checked was Emmie’s room, including under the bed. Henrietta didn’t answer him, but he could hear her footfalls on the stairs, so he continued upward without further comment. “No sense panicking when she’s clearly hiding somewhere, right?” “Let’s just look again,” he suggested, sprinting past Henrietta up the stairs. Or so he told himself before the child vanished while under the care of a human nanny. What he needed to do was train the child himself, using all the tools at his disposal to help her. No one wanted a full-on family battle, but a magical family battle while most of his immediate family was cursed to be powerless would be even worse. For two, most thought everyone in their family was cursed to have no magic whatsoever, so revealing the child’s powers might cause his mother’s side of the family to retaliate against them all. For one, everyone was so damn obsessed with the curse, it was hard to say how they’d treat his little girl. If she was being traditionally trained in the ways of the craft, other older witches would be guiding her along the path to controlling and using her magic with intention rather than with reckless abandon.īut it wasn’t like he could just send her to the local school in Assjacket with the other magical children. So far, Emmie hadn’t gone invisible or popped out of one location and to another, but Gannon knew there was a chance she’d figure it out one day on her own. “She can’t just have vanished.”Īctually, she could’ve. “I looked everywhere,” his nanny muttered, dragging a hand through her dense curls. “So if the doors haven’t opened, she’s somewhere in the house,” he managed, once he got his thoughts back on track. I’m so tired, my brain can’t possibly be functioning logically at this point. As she moved away, the sensation faded, and Gannon wasn’t sure if he’d imagined it or not. “Sorry,” Henrietta muttered, backing out of his touch. He’d told Jackie why he couldn’t be around a witch, so there was no chance the nanny his sister sent over would be a witch, right? She feels like magic.īut that was ridiculous. It was a familiar tingle, even if he hadn’t experienced the sensation in a very, very long time. No sooner had he touched her than a tingle of awareness raced from his palm all the way to the roots of his hair. “Sorry,” he managed, but his tone was distracted. She’d apparently decided to join him by the front door, so he reached out a hand to steady her when his turn knocked her off balance. When he turned to face Henrietta again, to inform her of just that, he almost ran into the petite woman.
